South Korea’s Hyundai are relative newcomers to the motor vehicle scene. The first car they designed and produced by themselves was the Pony back in 1975, which at one point became the top-selling car in Canada. Now, they’ve created a separate branch just for electric vehicles. They’re taking the environment seriously, with pioneering regeneration programmes alongside their commitment to shift sales to electric as rapidly as possible.
Key highlights
The Ioniq brand is a subdivision of Hyundai, established in 2020 specifically for the manufacturer’s electric vehicle line-up. They’re looking to the future, with all cars set to be given a number instead of a name: even numbers are reserved for sedans, and odd numbers for crossovers. The ‘Parametric Pixel’ is a unifying design concept: Hyundai’s ‘unique jewel-like design’ used for exterior lighting. It’s easy to see that they believe in electric vehicles as the cars of the future.
Hyundai: youngsters leading the way
Although Hyundai have only been producing cars since 1975, they’ve caught up and overtaken many of the older manufacturers who are sometimes stuck in their ways. They started researching electric vehicles in the early 90s, and by 1998 had a dedicated research team. By 2007 they had produced their first electric vehicle with an impressive range of 370 kilometres.
Over the following years, they leapt ahead in fuel cell technology, pledging a dedication to emission-free driving. Long ranges and quick refuelling times make hydrogen an appealing energy source for cars in the future. If there are going to be rapid advances, you can expect them from Hyundai.

Hyundai’s Kona is generally regarded as something of a game-changer in car critic circles. The major downside to electric vehicles has always been their potential range, putting off customers before they’ve even sat behind the wheel. But the Kona has a maximum range of just over 300 miles, edging it closer and closer towards the capabilities of petrol and diesel cars.
